Red Flower

I wanted to do something exotic for this piece, so I cut strips of half inch wide Spectrum glass and then chopped the ends and the sides with circle cutters. The white glass is by Kokomo, cut randomly with circle cutters as well.

I used a single yellow cabochon in the center and finished it off with bone grout, rather than black grout which would have just darkened the whole piece too much.

"Red Flower" measures only 6 inches square.

Here are some items I am working on for my Spring Collection.

This 8 sided earth tones piece is about 2 and a half inches tall. I'll be using black grout.

Here is a very colorful set of coasters for Spring in red, orange, cream and lime. These will also be grouted in black.

This finished set of striped coasters gives you a good idea of what the grout looks like with these colors. Lots of contrast.

Finally, here is my very first wall plaque. How gorgeous is this? It measures 6x6 and will also be grouted in black with black painted sides.

I just love how this one came out. I used four colors: yellow, amber, orange and two shades of red. When lit, it's phenomenal.

Embossed Butterfly

Since the economy still sucks and sales aren't what I thought they'd be, I'm trying something new: metal embossing.

Here are all the tools that come with the starter kit I ordered from Delphiglass.com. Also included (but not shown) is a great book with everything you need to know from beginning to end. Please excuse the filthy desk, made filthy by months of grouting mosaics.

The kit comes with three pieces of aluminum and three pieces of copper. I selected the aluminum for my first try.

The first thing you do is tape your piece to the metal. You then take the stylus (which is like a pen without ink) and trace around the design.

Here is how the other side looks after you're done.

You then remove the paper and use the teflon stylus to re-trace the lines to give them depth.

Using the various tools and two mats, you will work the metal on either side to give it detail and character.

I had intended to make this for my mother as a gift, but towards the end, I punched a hole in the metal by pressing too hard.

I'll have to start again from scratch with another piece of foil, but I learned a lot in just one night.

There are so many great pros when it comes to metal embossing:
1. It's quiet. There's no breaking of glass.
2. It's fast. No waiting for glue to try and a piece can be finished in one day.
3. It's cleaner. No grouting, gluing
4. It's safer. There are no tiny shards of glass to worry about cutting yourself on, although the metal edges are something to watch out for.

I'm in no way giving up Shards of Glass, but I have plans to incorporate these two mediums in future creations.

Blue and White Art Deco Candle Holders

These cobalt and white Art Deco candle holders were surprisingly hard to photograph. Dark colors like cobalt blue and red tend to be highly reflective. I had to build a lightbox out of a piece of glass, two magazine holders and a desk lamp. I think the end result was worth the trouble.

Green Votive

I made this one out of some shards of scrap glass I'd obtained over a year ago. The light green color was too beautiful to ignore, so I decided to see what I could do with it by cutting the pieces smaller and gluing them to this eight sided votive holder. The rustic-looking result reminds me of something I might ~~steal from~~ see in a restaurant in Italy. It's a smaller piece, measuring about 2 3/4 tall.

New Stripes!

Here are five new mosaics that are in the drying stage.

This first one is a 3 inch cube that I did as a special order. She had requested Tuscany colors, so I used orange, amber, olive and smokey amber. The amber and olive glass are textured waterglass.

The Tuscany design got me thinking about those earthy colors, so I played around with them, this time adding cream and omitting the orange. "Tuscany 2.0" is 2.5 inches square.

This is my favorite piece. The main color is white, but I've thrown in a bit of color. In this case, lime green and smokey amber. It's crisp, clean and summery. "White Stripes" could spawn its own collection, so I'm thinking of going that route if this becomes popular.

Here's another color combination I've been waiting to do for a long time. Lilac, light blue, teal, and sand come together to create a color scheme I call "Under the Sea."

This is Teal Stripe, with some amber and cream thrown in for contrast. This teal glass lights up beautifully, so I use it any chance I get.

I will post more pictures once these are all grouted.

New Designs: DNA

Here is a new design that I'm really looking forward to putting together. I call it DNA, because it was the first thing that came to mind when I finished it. As you can see, the design works well even when flipped 90 degrees. The colors would be amber, pale amber (the longer pieces) and red. What do you think of DNA? New Toy

I received a light tent in the mail yesterday, something I've wanted for a long time. It was a steal at $25 on eBay!

The best thing about this photo tent is that it is 24 inches square, yet folds down to about 8 inches square for easy transport. It came with four different colored backgrounds and a mini tripod!

I have to admit that when I first pulled it out of the package, it sprang open and hit me in the face.

I'm planning a big reshoot of all my mosaics soon for Etsy. There are about 10 more items for me to add. Stay tuned!

The two cubes on the either end are complete, they just need to dry and get grouted.

The one in the center I started last night. Below is a closer look. The great thing about small tiles is that they dry very quickly, so these three should be done soon. I just need to decide on what color grout to use. (I'm partial to black)

Spring Consultation

Over the weekend, I had a little consultation of sorts with my sister. She gave me two small tea light containers to mosaic for her. I had these four colors in my mind for a while, but didn't know what to do with them.

I've finished one, and placed it next to the unfinished one for comparison. This is my first attempt at a patterned design and I'm very proud of it. It was a challenge to not only continue the pattern uninterrupted, but to ensure that the tiles were aligned, since these are wider at the top than at the bottom.

Confetti

This is my first cylindrical piece. It took me a full year to get to this point. I always assumed that the glue would be too wet and that the pieces would start to slide off.

To my surprise, I was able to put this together in just one evening. The trick is to apply the glue in small areas, let it dry a bit, and then press your pieces on. There may be some movement, but not nearly as much as you think. And if you've already got a few pieces well dried, you can probably use tape to anchor the loose ones (although I did not need to try this myself)

This random "confetti" candle holder came about when I noticed how much scrap glass I had laying around. After sorting it by color, I started cutting it up into pieces approximately 1/4 inch square. I had no idea what I would do with it just yet, but I told myself not to care about the shapes of the pieces. It was a lot of fun to do something that didn't require me to be accurate or careful.

I'm really impressed with the colors I chose. I didn't use any neutral colors because I wanted this to be festive and colorful. And don't we need a little color now?

After I grout this baby, I'll be posting pictures. I'm not sure where it will end up.

It's Feedback Time Again

I've decided to play around with orange. Here are three different color combinations that I've come up with for a new three-piece set.

In this first version, I decided to put just one stripe of orange because it's such a powerful color and I didn't want it to overwhelm the piece and look too "Halloweenish".

Here, I added orange to the top and bottom, in the same manner as my previous striped models. This gives it more of a sense of balance.

Now here is where you need to pay attention. This third variant may look identical to the image above, but I've taken the sand color (top and bottom stripe of the first one) and inserted it where the almond color was.

There's more contrast this way, but I just can't make up my mind.

What do you think? A, B, or C? I like hearing your feedback. So far, two out of two people have told me to go with B or C.

This purple one is a birthday gift for my sister, although I am in the process of making more of them, due to high demand. It's truly stunning.

I love the idea behind this. What you're seeing here are all four sides of the same piece, which means that you could have four lined up like this and they would appear to flow into each other. I can't wait to try this out. It would be great as a two, three or even four piece set!

Deco Disaster!

Now that I'm doing most of my gluing during the week, I've noticed that not being systematic (or patient) can result in disaster.

Due to overwhelming praise for my deco design, I quickly started assembling another. It wasn't until I grouted the piece that I noticed a crack, right in the center of the middle piece. I figured out that this was due to my handling of the piece before it had completely dried. And then I saw a second crack, in the same spot, in the adjoining side.

Below is a rendering of what happened.

It's currently half disassembled and filthy, sitting on my work table while its fate is determined. I don't know if I should try to repair the two sides, or dunk the whole thing in hot water to release the glue so I can start from scratch.

I now have to date all of my pieces as I'm done with them to ensure that none of them are grouted sooner than two weeks.

The Cut Sheet

I was hoping to publish new photos by now, but a grouting session gone awry (and a cold) have pushed things out another week.

In the meantime, I continue to think up new ways of doing things to save time and speed things up.

I hate wasting glass, so I've discovered that I can simulate how much glass I'd need to cut in advance by laying it out in a grid on my computer. Assuming I'm very careful and don't have any cutting accidents.

With my three-piece Deco set well underway, I decided to play around with the original design to see how it could be adapted to a different sized base. I picked up a 6 inch tall vase at a flea market a while back, and used that as inspiration when I came up with these three. I purposely used vertical pieces to emphasize the height of the base.

All Good Things Come in Three-Piece Sets

This is a new three-piece set in almond and three different shades of purple. The textured glass was difficult to cut, shattering on the first try. The almond glass also gave me attitude. The stips of glass are temporarily taped on to give me a good idea of what the finished product will look like.

And this is the same set in red, almond and white.

Today I cut all the glass for my three piece, deco-inspired set. Cutting the green glass was easy. The almond glass gave me headaches, shattering as I tried to run the score (I'd later learn that I needed to press harder when cutting).

You might notice a slight difference in the design. I tried making those tiny squares, but they kept coming out sloppy.

Even though the almond color of the production model is a lot lighter than the tan from the computer model, I think it should work just fine.

After a long hiatus (vacation, holidays), I'm heading back into the world of mosaics. Here is an art deco-influenced design that I came up with for a three-piece set. The center would be a 3-inch cube, and the two on the side would be 2.5 inch cubes.

I need your feedback. What do you think? Don't be shy now.
